International Cooperation

Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) is one of the main national universities in Vietnam, leading in education of the country human resource on agricultural science and technology.

The number of students at VNUA has been continuously increasing annually at a very high rate. In the 2013-2014 academic year, there were 25,000 students but a year later this number increased up to 33.992. In the 2014-2015 academic year, VNUA has received 397 associate students, 8955 undergraduates, and 511 masters driving the current number of students to 38.484.

VNUA's staff has also increased to meet training demand. Up to 2014, the total number of VNUA's staff is more than 1300 persons. The Vietnamese nation and government have more than once expressed their high regard to VNUA for the its contribution to Vietnam's agricultural development during the past several decades.

The three main tasks of VNUA including education, research and technology transfer require VNUA to explore all funding resources from the government, and the international and domestic organizations, institutions, and universities which VNUA has established partnership with, etc. VNUA always considers directions and supports of the MARD, the MOET, other government ministries and central and local government organizations, as important factors for the development of VNUA's international relations. In 1999 and 2001, VNUA was awarded MOET Awards for its international works.

Overview of International Cooperation

The international cooperation activities of VNUA have been very diversified over the years, which include joint research projects, joint training programs, MOUs signing, accademic exchanges, joint organization of conferences, workshops, seminars, and meetings, etc.

VNUA has signed Memoranda of Understanding with 114 universities in 25 countries which has enabled the Univeristy's participation in innovative and collaborative projects, joint traning programs, staff and student exhanges, etc.

1. International Collaboration Projects

The funding that the international projects generated proved to be an important part in the whole VNUA's financial budget. During the period of 2007 - 2011, there were 24 projects with total budget of US$10 million. Objectives of on-going projects mainly focus on VNUA’s agricultural strength including rural development, horticulture, veterinary, postharvest technology, engineering, etc. Due to the decrease in the total fund supporting to Vietnam from international donors as Vietnam has transformed from a poor country to a lower middle income country, the number of new international funded projects has declined. Currently, 9 international funded projects with total budget of US$ 1million are being implemented by the University.

Those international cooperation projects also have greatly contributed to the improvement of VNUA’s laboratories and demonstration fields with new and up-to-date equipment and facilities and especially to the capacity building for VNUA’s staff and students with thousands of them having opportunities to participate in short training courses, to pursue under and post graduate education, and to develop joint academic publications, etc.

 Workshops and Seminars

Over the last five years, VNUA has organized and co-organized more than 40 workshops and seminars on different themes focusing on urgent issues such as sustainable agricultural development, climate change, food security, water and environment management, etc. Those workshops and seminars drew a large number of participants from many international as well as domestic academic institutions. The workshops and conferences were excellent forums and arena for discussion and information and knowledge exchanges between VNUA's researchers and others which has certainly elevated VNUA regards internationally.

2. Visitors, Training and Student Exchanges

During the period of 2007-2011, VNUA has received 330 foreign delegations with total participants of 1,661. In 2013, 105 delegations from 18 countries with total participants of 700 visited the University.

In the same period, 1,035 VNUA's staff went abroad to visit, to take part in short-course trainings, to participate/present at international scientific conferences, and to pursue higher education etc.

It is worthy noted that VNUA has carried out annually student exchange programs with several universities including Yunan University (China), Kasersart University, Suranaree Technology University (Thailand), Tokyo University of Agriculture, Saga University of Agriculture, Ryukus University of Agriculture, Yamagata University and Kagoshima University of Agriculture (Japan) and a summer school course with Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (Czech Republic).

Importantly, VNUA has joined the ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Program since 2012. To faciliate the AIMS program implementation, VNUA has started discussions with the AIMS partners regarding opportunities, policies, and plans for student exchanges and a credit transfer system from the academic year 2014-2015.

3. Foreign Students

Since 1964 VNUA has been offering undergraduate and graduate training programs for Cambodian and Lao students. Since then, VNUA has trained 450 Lao graduates (406 undergraduates, 34 masters and 10 PhDs) and 78 Cambodian ones (56 undergraduates, 13 masters and 9 PhDs). The number of students from Laos and Cambodia has increased by years. During 1998-2003, there were 23 Cambodian and 6 Lao graduates; however, during 2007-2011, there were up to 167 and 11 Lao and Cambodia students correspondingly. Currently, 26 Lao students (14 undergraduates, 10 masters, and 02 doctoral candidates) and 12 Cambodian ones (11 undergraduates and 01 doctoral candidate) are studying at VNUA. The government of Laos PDR awarded VNUA with the 1st Level Labor Medal in 1999 for its achievement in human resource building capacity for Lao people.

Also, VNUA has received fulltime undergraduate students from Angola, Mozambique, and Mongolia. At present, there are 6 students from Angola, 5 from Mozambique. In addition, students from several countries including Belgium, Japan, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, etc came to VNUA to do their thesis/dissertation research.

*/ Publications

Through international cooperation activities, VNUA's researchers have had many accademic articles published in international high ranking journals, conference and workshop proceedings. With JICA support, VNUA has its own scientific journal in English and has been so far published 67 volumes both in Vietnamese and Enghlish.
